The Minya Court just sentenced 528 people to death in the world’s biggest execution ruling this century. The trial was filled with anomalies, and if the sentence is carried out, it could set in motion a dangerous spiral of violence. But Grand Mufti Shawqi Allam has 10 days to reject the decision.

For any Egyptian, of any political or religious affiliation, this was a mockery of justice. If any of Egypt’s children can be put to death under these circumstances, Egypt will not only become more divided, but the integrity of the democratic institutions it aspires to will be damaged forever.

Allam is the first Mufti to be elected by his peers, and has a legitimate mandate to be the nation’s moral leader.
