History up for auction at Wounded Knee

To President Barack Obama and Interior Secretary Sally Jewell:

As concerned Americans, we urge you to intervene and preserve Wounded Knee as a National Monument, honoring that hallowed ground and the many who lost their lives there. The House and Senate have already agreed to support such a memorial in prior resolutions, but twenty-three years later, even while Wounded Knee is designated a National Historic Landmark, nothing has been done. Respecting and memorializing this site will go a long way toward building a More Perfect Union.

History up for auction at Wounded Knee
In just days, the 40-acre site of the Wounded Knee massacre -- a haunting and irreplaceable piece of American history -- could be auctioned off to the highest bidder. We need to act now to stop the sell off and preserve this iconic place for good.

On May 1 the man that owns the Wounded Knee site in South Dakota, where hundreds of Native American men, women and children were butchered by US cavalry over a century ago, says he’ll auction off the land unless the local Oglala Sioux can match his $3.9 million asking price. With more than half of the local Native American population living below the poverty line, that price tag is far out reach for the Oglala -- but not for the US government.

Last month, the federal government converted five historic sites across the country into national monuments. It has every reason to do the same with Wounded Knee -- to purchase, preserve and honor this sacred area. President Obama has the authority to do this. Ask him to act now, sign the petition!
