To European and British leaders:

The fall of Assad’s regime should be a moment of freedom and celebration. We’re shocked by the recent push from various European governments to take advantage of this to push anti-refugee policies. It’s a cynical disgrace. Syrians still need our help: we won’t stand by while our governments slam shut the door or call for deportations.

The collapse of Assad's brutal regime should be a moment of hope and relief for Syrians - both within Syria and for the millions displaced around the world after more than 13 long, brutal years.

But before the dust has even settled, and with lots of difficult questions still unanswered, right-wing populists across Europe and the UK are already cynically jumping on this moment to attack the rights of refugees and asylum seekers.

Government ministers are calling for an end to asylum applications from Syrians, and some are even talking about forcibly sending Syrians back. What should be a moment of freedom and liberation is already being twisted and contorted into an anti-migration program.
