Stop torture in Tanzania
To Tanzania's international funders and partners:
As citizens from across the world, we are deeply alarmed by the human rights violations being perpetrated by Tanzanian security forces. We call on you to immediately:
- Condemn abuse and demand independent investigations;
- Suspend financial support until credible safeguards are in place;
- Tie all future aid to enforceable human rights standards.

Her “crime”? Publicising and protesting the sham trial of an opposition leader. Security forces seized and brutally tortured her and a fellow activist for days before dumping them on the side of the road. These horrors are becoming all too common in Tanzania, where opposition voices are facing intimidation, arrests, and torture. Just weeks ago, a local human rights defender who denounced police brutality was abducted. He is still missing.
But we can pressure President Samia Suluhu Hassan to stop the rampage.
Tanzania is a major recipient of international aid from governments and institutions that defend democracy and human rights. So WHY are they funding a government that tortures people? Let’s build a global call: cut the cash until they clean up their act. It’s worked before! Violence is escalating: sign now!
