Stop torture in Tanzania

To Tanzania's global partners:

As citizens from across the world, we are deeply alarmed by the human rights violations being perpetrated by Tanzanian security forces. We call on you to immediately:
  • Condemn abuse and demand independent investigations;
  • Use your financial leverage to ensure credible safeguards are in place;
  • Tie all future aid to enforceable human rights standards.

Stop torture in Tanzania
“I came back broken, but I refuse to be silenced”.

That’s what Boniface Mwangi said after being tortured and raped by Tanzanian security forces. His“crime”? Protesting the sham trial of an opposition leader.

After days of horror, they dumped him in the dust by the side of the road.

Elections are approaching, and repression is intensifying. It’s clear that the Tanzanian government will keep bullying and brutalizing its critics until it faces real consequences.

That’s where we come in. Donors and lenders pour billions into Tanzania – which gives them power. Right now, the International Monetary Fund is making its final decision on whether to hand over a staggering US$441 million.

Let’s demand that the IMF—and all international partners—use that power to call out the Tanzanian government. It’s worked before: last year the government halted human rights abuses after attention from donors. Now it’s time to raise our voices again!
