From climate change to nuclear arms, the threats we face today as a people and a planet could end life on Earth, and everything we love.

To rise to meet them, we have to come together more than ever before. And right now the only global mechanism we have is the United Nations. But so many times, from Syria to refugees, we've watched it crippled by horse-trading and interests of the richest nations.

The Paris climate change agreement was a rare triumph for the UN. Why? People demanded it, and great political leadership. Now, we have a unique chance to do it again to choose the next UN Secretary General -- the one person who could turn this bloated bureaucracy into planet-saving heroes.

And our global movement may be the only one that can influence every country in the UN. That's why Avaaz is starting a special "Global Governance" campaign to reform the UN and to show up for key battles until it becomes the institution we need it to be. Join on the right!

To be honest -- if we don't do this, no one who has clout will. And we'll be left wringing our hands when action to stop massacres of children are blocked, or agreements that could save our oceans and forests get watered down. To get to the world we want requires we make the UN an agile, democratic body not one stymied by outdated rules and alliances.

And we've already started -- we played a significant role in making the selection of the Secretary-General this year move from a secretive, back-room process to an open, democratic one. Now talk of reform has an incredibly different tone than before inside the UN. The opportunity is there for the taking.

Those that join the community will get information and emails to take action when moments for change come up. Of course we won't fix everything overnight, but if we build a campaigning community that consistently and relentlessly holds the UN to account, we can restore hope that it will rise to its promise in the 21st century. The UN was born out of a beautiful, ambitious vision: a world where governments cooperate to address our most serious problems, and through our interdependence, make sure we never again saw the global warfare of the World Wars. But in the seven decades since, the UN has fallen short of its incredible promise. Let's turn that around, starting today.
