Alaska Tribes vs. Canada Mines
To the entire federal government of Canada, and to the British Columbia government:
Sovereign Tribes in Southeast Alaska have not consented to rapid mining development occurring in the headwaters of the transboundary rivers that they have depended on since time immemorial. The Tribes are already seeing the impact of Canadian mining projects on their lands – we urge you to honour your international human rights obligations and recognise their right to deep consultation on development decisions across the three watersheds at the heart of the mining development: The Taku/T'aaḵu Héeni (Tlingit), Stikine/Shtax'heen (Tlingit) and Unuk/Joonax (Tlingit).

But salmon and other vulnerable wildlife know no borders…and neither does poisonous mining waste.
This could be another sad story of profit before people – but there's a chance to stop this, and create a precedent for the rights of Indigenous peoples whose traditional territories were separated by political borders. Here's how: Canada’s Supreme Court says that non-Canadians can have their rights granted if they can prove they have lived on the land since before that border was created. And…these communities have proof!
A new mining application this month is becoming a test case – and the Canadian government is freaking out. A huge show of support to the Tribes fighting for their future can show federal and provincial decision-makers: No decision about us without us! Sign and share widely:
