Billions for Ukraine - stuck in the UK

Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Foreign Secretary David Lammy:

For nearly three years, £2.5 billion from the sale of Chelsea FC has sat in a UK bank, instead of helping Ukraine’s war victims as promised. With Trump and Putin conspiring to cut some grubby deal, every penny counts. The UK government must end this absurd delay and release the funds now!

Billions for Ukraine - stuck in the UK
It’s almost beyond belief: what could be one of the largest ever humanitarian funds for Ukraine - £2.5 billion pounds! - has been stuck in bureaucratic limbo for THREE YEARS, while UK government ministers drag their feet on finalising the details.

Incredibly, not a penny of this even comes from the tax-payer. This money was pledged by the Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, after he was sanctioned and forced to sell Chelsea Football Club over his “clear connections” to Putin.

But as we approach the 3-year anniversary of the invasion, and as Trump and Putin conspire together to cut some grubby deal – the money is still just languishing in a UK bank account – waiting for our government to agree the details and sign off on the transfer. It is vital now more than ever that victims of this barbaric invasion get the support they need before it's too late - and that the UK government stops dragging their feet:
