Urgent: aid for the Syrian people, not the regime

To the United Nations, Friends of Syria Group, and donor countries:

As global citizens we urgently call for you to support the call for humanitarian aid to help the people of Syria, but we harbour deep reservations about the disbursement of any UN aid to groups affiliated with the Syrian government -- responsible for so much of the humanitarian disaster to begin with. We call on you to work instead to ensure no funds fall into the hands of the regime, and all operations and funds are managed by regime-independent agencies that can distribute aid throughout the country. These should include the UN agencies, ICRC, International NGOs and Aid Coordination Unit (ACU) of the Syrian National Coalition.

Urgent: aid for the Syrian people, not the regime
In two days, donor countries will meet to finalise plans to give one and half billion dollars in humanitarian aid to Syrian people suffering inside Syria and to refugees. This would be great news, but all documents show that 500 million of these dollars will be managed by government ministries and agencies affiliated with Bashar Al Assad, the man responsible for the bloodbath! We can stop this crazy handout and ensure the operations are run by independent agencies and reach the most needy.

Driven by Assad’s terror machine, 2.5 million Syrians have fled their homes, 65,000 have been killed, and everyday we hear stories of rape and child torture. It would be an outrage to even consider giving Assad ministries control of this aid package. This is a regime under serious international sanctions. But there is another way to help. The UN and donors can ensure all funds and operations are managed by regime-independent agencies, including the ICRC and the Aid Coordination Unit (ACU) of the Syrian National Coalition, the recognised representative of the Syrian people.

Governments meet in two days to finalise aid pledges -- together we can persuade donors to ensure aid from our countries is sent to all of the worst hit areas and not to groups controlled by the same regime bombing and slaughtering its people. Sign the urgent petition to support the one billion in aid for refugees and ensure the rest of the money is given out independently.
