Big Tobacco's deadly attack

To the ICSID Tribunal arbitrating the Philip Morris-Uruguay BIT dispute:

We call on you to rule in favour of Uruguay in the lawsuit brought against them by Philip Morris for passing effective anti-smoking laws. Uruguay has the right to protect the public health of its citizens, and a ruling in Philip Morris's favour would open the door for them to attack anti-smoking laws in all of our countries. These laws are saving lives everywhere, and our governments should be able to enact and enforce them everywhere.

Big Tobacco's deadly attack
Big tobacco is suing Uruguay for having the best anti-smoking laws in the world, and there’s a good chance they could win unless we act quickly.

Uruguay requires 80% of the cigarette package to be covered with medical warnings and graphic images. These strict laws were put in place because smoking has reached crisis levels across the country, killing almost 7 Uruguayans each day.

And they’re working! Smoking has decreased every year since Uruguay took this bold action. But tobacco giant Philip Morris is saying the warning labels leave no space for their trademarks, and is determined to spend huge sums to win and make an example out of Uruguay.

This case is not just about one struggling nation, it opens the door for big tobacco to challenge life-saving public health laws everywhere -- the company already has 3 other countries in their crosshairs, and over 100 others have anti-smoking laws that are at risk.

The court is already hearing arguments so we have to move fast. Avaaz can hire world-class lawyers to argue our side -- but their arguments will only work if they can show the world is with them.

Sign now -- each of our names will be submitted to the court in one massive call for freedom from big tobacco.
