A strong media that holds those in power to account is vital to our democracy, but the sheer size of the Murdoch empire has perverted this function, corrupted our most important institutions and led to gross abuses of privacy . Maria Miller MP, the new Minister for Culture, Media and Sport, just joined Twitter for the first time. Let’s take this opportunity to remind her that when media moguls get too powerful, we all suffer.

Over the last year, the headlines have been full of the terrible abuses by the Murdoch press -- hacking the phones of everyone from missing school girls to MPs, buying confidential medical records and corrupting the police. It has now emerged that burglaries may even have been part of their dirty trick tactics. The Leveson media enquiry is tasked with considering how to ensure these abuses never happen again, but experts say that the Tory party -- Miller’s party -- are now considering kicking the issue into the long grass.
