CH2M Hill: Speak out for Qatar’s modern slaves

Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Emir of Qatar; Hassan Abdullah Al-Thawadi, Secretary-General, Qatar 2022 Supreme Committee; Jacqueline Hinman, CEO, CH2M Hill :

As global citizens, we're deeply concerned by the conditions migrant workers in Qatar are forced to work under for the 2022 World Cup. We urge you to put in place a public policy that ensures every worker on World Cup sites can keep their passports, are granted exit visas, and protected with basic rights and safeties. We also call on the Qatari government to reform its "guest" worker programme and allow any foreign labourer the right to return home. These changes would inspire global confidence in Qatar and CH2M Hill, and have a dramatic impact on the 1.4 million migrants working in the country.

CH2M Hill is the lead project manager for the Qatar 2022 World Cup and can make a difference in the lives of hundreds of thousands of migrant workers.

Men from poor countries are coming to Qatar with the promise of good work, but all too often find they are trapped in frightening circumstances with no way out. The root of their suffering is kafala, Qatar’s sponsorship system which ties migrant workers to their employers. Case after case has been documented of workers unable to leave the country or change jobs without their employers’ permission.

As the public face of the World Cup construction and a company making profits from Qatar’s building boom, CH2M Hill can and must do more to move the government and construction contractors to comply with international best practices. CH2M Hill’s ethical track record means the expectations on its conduct are higher.
