Burning a billion

To State Bank of India Chairperson, Arundhati Bhattacharya, and the SBI Board:

As citizens across the world concerned about climate change and the Great Barrier Reef, we call on you to turn down finance for Adani's controversial Carmichael mine and related infrastructure. A large number of private banks have walked away from this destructive and costly project. In line with your commitment to crack down on bad loans, we urge you to reject this proposal and instead invest in clean power supplies.

Burning a billion
It's crazy money for a crazy project. An Indian bank wants to splash a billion dollars on a mine and port complex which could trash our planet's climate and destroy the Great Barrier Reef, home to hundreds of species of precious birds, whales and turtles.

We've helped build the climate momentum that's led a list of governments -- including China's -- to promise to burn less coal, the dirtiest fossil fuel. Winning this battle to stop Indian mega corporation Adani from carving out an enormous new coal mine in Australia and shipping it back home across the world's largest coral reef would bring another major country on board.

The project makes no sense for our planet, and no sense financially, that's why major European and American banks have turned it down. If we shine a spotlight on the men and women on the board of the State Bank of India, we can get them to back away from burning a billion and instead put their money into clean power schemes.
