To the members of the Security Council and the General Assembly:

We the peoples of the United Nations, concerned global citizens, demand an end to the secret process for appointing the Secretary General. We demand a timely and structured process, a clear and public selection criteria, and a list of candidates with clear policy platforms. The Security Council should propose more than one candidate to the General Assembly to choose from, and the Secretary-General should be appointed to a single and non-renewable seven-year term. The current process is inexcusable, and we won't wait another four years to fix it.

Right now, negotiations are underway to appoint the next UN Secretary General. With the world in a mess, from looming climate disaster to a massive refugee crisis, we need someone up to the job – but we have no say. The Security Council agrees on a final, single nominee – usually after secret bargaining by the 5 permanent members – and then tell the General Assembly to approve the appointment.

It’s not just unacceptable; it’s a complete insult to the democratic values shared by most of the world. A massive campaign is already underway to bust open the process, and it’s time for us to supercharge it. The demand is this: that when it comes to making a decision that will impact our children, our grandchildren, and the future of our planet, our leaders let us see how the decision is made.
