The End of the Great Barrier Reef?

To Board Members of Aurizon Holdings Limited:

As concerned citizens around the world, we urge you not to invest in coal mines or ports near the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage area. Not only are such projects risky financial investments in an uncertain regulatory environment, but the impact of such projects could cause irreparable damage to the climate and put the Great Barrier Reef at risk.

The End of the Great Barrier Reef?
Around the world the smart money is moving away from polluting coal. Some of Australia’s biggest mining companies are backing away from this project and have left one Indian company, GVK, to lead. But GVK’s finances are shaky and they need another company to jump in and share the risks with them.

And the risks are financial, environmental and reputational! When you read the details of what it will entail -- it is extraordinary that it is even being considered. It will require extending a massive port in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef so it can accommodate huge ships and then dredging three million cubic metres of seabed and dumping all of the rubble within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. This precious marine life habitat once devastated cannot be replaced and the climate implications for this mega coal project are global.

UNESCO is up in arms that Australia is considering devastating this precious site. We know that the massive outcry in Australia last week changed the conversation about this investment. Now we need to push them over the edge to recognise that protecting the Great Barrier Reef is far more important than a fast buck. Sign now to get Aurizon to say no and share this widely:
