Fair Trade not Fast Track
President Obama is pushing Congress to grant him the power to ‘Fast Track’ global trade deals that would give corporations unprecedented power. Now Pelosi said she might go along with with this dangerous attempt to sidestep our democracy -- but if we act now, we can stiffen the spine of our allies in Congress to demand a fair deal.

Use the form on the right to send a message. Here are some talking points to help you:
  • I call on you to exercise your constitutionally mandated democratic oversight over trade and investment, and to vote against any blank check Trade Promotion Authority (‘Fast Track’) bill.
  • I recognize and appreciate your longstanding leadership on this issue. Despite the overwhelming pressure from the White House, now is the time to stand strong, not to cave. I strongly oppose a blank check Fast Track bill.

  • Any Trade Promotion Authority (TPA) bill must be narrow, give Congress meaningful authority to set negotiating objectives and reign in the administration when it’s selling-out to the highest corporate bidders, and maintain democratic oversight over the trade negotiation process.

  • Specifically, any TPA must: protect the environment and workers’ rights; safeguard food safety and the financial regulations that benefit all of us; prohibit the establishment of secret global investor courts (ISDS); and stand strong for human rights and access to medicines.

  • The devil is in the details with these trade agreements. We are counting on you to ensure that any TPA bill guarantees that the potential benefits of trade are spread broadly to the many, and don’t just accrue to the few.

For years, Wall Street insiders have been working behind closed doors to draft a bunch of top secret, pro-corporate trade deals. President Obama is worried that when the details of the deals are made public there will be massive opposition, so he’s asking Congress to give away its own constitutional powers by granting the President the power to negotiate, and sign(!), trade deals in secret, only giving lawmakers a yes or no vote.

Last year, the Democrats stopped this shady plan in its tracks, but house leader Nancy Pelosi just changed her mind and said she’s likely to support Obama’s plan -- and she’s bringing other key opponents along with her. Together we can overwhelm Pelosi and the rest of the house leadership with thousands of email messages -- send yours now, and when we reach 20,000, Avaaz will go all in on a people-powered lobbying effort to match Obama’s:
